For a project specification, that is not a matter of taste. The joint is a space with a function: it absorbs movement, it conceals dimensional differences, and it gives the surface its rhythm.

How much grout width do you need for tiles?

The tile joint width indoors is between 2 and 4 mm. For a wall, 2 to 3 mm works, and for a floor, 3 to 4 mm. Outdoors, a minimum of 5 mm applies. A rule of thumb is that the joint should be at least twice the dimensional tolerance of the tile.

The grout is the narrow space between two tiles. That space appears small, but it does three things at once. It accommodates the movement exhibited by every tile and every substrate. It conceals the slight dimensional variation present on the tile after firing. And it determines the rhythm of the surface, and thus the appearance.

Therefore, the minimum joint width is not zero. A common industry rule of thumb is that the joint should be at least twice the dimensional tolerance of the tile, with a practical minimum of around 2 mm on the inside. A tile with a tolerance of a few tenths of a millimeter therefore requires space to prevent that deviation from being visible. On a floor, that minimum is higher than on a wall, because a floor bears a load and the grout needs to compact properly.

The most important argument against a grout joint that is too narrow is movement. Every tile expands and contracts due to temperature and humidity fluctuations. Without sufficient grout, edge tension occurs, resulting in chips and hairline cracks. The grout color then determines how prominently that joint is visible. Which standard determines the minimum joint width?

There is no standard that prescribes a fixed joint width in millimeters. However, three frameworks guide the choice: NEN-EN 13888-1 for the joint mortar, the laying technique according to DIN 18157, and the dimensional tolerance from EN 14411. Together, they provide the minimum for each situation.

Anyone looking for a joint width in a standard will not find a fixed figure. The European joint mortar standard NEN-EN 13888-1:2022 classifies the material, not the width. That standard divides joint mortars into cement-based (CG) and reactive resin (RG), with performance level 1 or 2 and the designations W for low water absorption and A for wear resistance. The standard therefore determines the jointing material, not the width.

The width itself is determined by the laying technique and the material. The German laying guideline DIN 18157 links the joint width to the side length of the tile. Up to a side length of around 150 mm, approximately 2 mm suffices; beyond that dimension, the margin lies between 2 and 8 mm, depending on the size and zone. Within this range, the dimensional tolerance from the ceramic standard EN 14411 determines the bottom edge. A tile with a larger production tolerance requires a wider joint to compensate for that difference.

The Building Decree has an indirect influence. The performance requirements in Building Decree 2012 focus on floors in wet rooms and on the flatness of finishing layers, not on the joint itself. NEN 2747 specifies the flatness classes commonly used in specifications for finishing floors. The flatter the substrate, the narrower the joint can be safely kept. Format

How does the tile size determine the grout width?

Smaller tiles require a wider grout joint than you might intuitively think. Sizes up to 30×30 cm often have a 3 to 5 mm grout joint to compensate for production differences. From 60×60 cm upwards, you work with 2 to 3 mm, provided the edge is straight and the substrate is flat.

Size and grout width are inversely related to what many people expect. A small tile has relatively more size variation per linear meter because you lay more tiles next to each other. These deviations add up in the line, so a wider grout keeps the look straight. A mosaic or a small wall format therefore typically has a grout width of 3 to 5 mm.

Large format reverses the logic. A tile of 60×120 cm or larger has fewer joints per square meter and a surface that visually extends seamlessly. A joint that is too wide breaks that effect. Tiles with a rectified edge—meaning an edge that has been ground straight at a right angle after firing—allow for a joint of 2 to 3 mm. Separate minimums apply per zone. An interior wall requires 2 to 3 mm, and an interior floor 3 to 4 mm. Outside, maintain 5 mm due to frost, water, and larger temperature differences. A wall bears no load and can therefore be tighter than a floor.

The zone determines how much a tile moves and how much water is absorbed. An interior wall bears no load and experiences little movement, so a joint of 2 to 3 mm is sufficient. An interior floor does bear load and requires the grout to compact well, making 3 to 4 mm more common. The landscape changes outdoors. Tiles on a terrace or roof deck are exposed to freeze-thaw cycles, rainwater, and expansion of the paving substrate. Tile spacers or leveling: how do you keep the grout even?

Tile spacers fix the grout width at a fixed measurement between the tiles. A leveling system does the same, but additionally levels the height so that no edge differences occur. For large-format and thicker tiles, a leveling system works better than individual spacers.

The grout width on paper only becomes truly uniform using the tool on the floor. Tile spacers are small plastic crosses that you place between the tiles and remove as soon as the tile adhesive has hardened. They fix the horizontal distance, but they do not adjust the height. For a flat surface and a small size, this works perfectly fine.

A leveling system goes a step further. It clamps adjacent tiles at the same height while the adhesive cures, ensuring that no noticeable edge forms between the tiles. This edge difference is called lippage, and it is difficult to avoid by hand, especially with large-format and thicker tiles. Which grout and grout color match your joint width?

The grain size of the joint mortar must match the joint width. A fine-grained mortar works for joints of 1 to 6 mm, while a coarser one is suitable for joints of 4 mm or more. For a narrow joint, choose a cement-based mortar according to NEN-EN 13888-1, class CG2 with the designations W and A.

The joint width and the joint mortar choose each other. A mortar with coarse grains of more than 1 mm does not compact well in a 2 mm joint. A fine-grained variant generally works between 1 and 6 mm, while a coarser one only works from 4 mm and wider.
