For large-format tile adhesive, choose a C2 class cement adhesive, almost always with S1 or S2 deformability. C2 stands for an adhesive strength of at least 1,0 N per square millimeter. On walls, a T is added for stability, so that the panel does not sag during curing.

Porcelain stoneware plays a unique role in this regard. Porcelain stoneware is a dense, fully fired ceramic tile with low water absorption, meaning the back draws little water from the adhesive. As a result, the adhesive bonds differently than with a porous tile, and mechanical anchoring in the adhesive bed is more important. A C2 adhesive with the correct deformability and full embedding is therefore the secure foundation, and the rest of this article explains how to justify that choice.

Standards

What do the class designations on tile adhesive mean?

The capital letter indicates the type: C is cementitious. The number represents the adhesion, C2 being stronger than C1. Additional letters stand for properties: T for stability, E for extended open time, F for rapid curing, and S1 or S2 for deformability.

A bag of tile adhesive bears a short code that tells exactly what the adhesive can do. The structure is defined in the standard and reads from left to right. The capital letter indicates the binder: C for cement-based adhesive, the most commonly used type for ceramics. The number following it is the adhesion class. A C1 adhesive meets the basic value, while a C2 adhesive bonds with at least 1,0 N per square millimeter and is the class required for large formats.

The letters that follow describe the behavior during and after processing. T stands for stability, meaning that a vertically placed tile does not sink before the adhesive sets. E stands for an extended open time, the time during which the combed adhesive continues to bond before a sheet is applied. F stands for fast curing, useful for tight schedules. Deformability

Why does large format require a deformable adhesive?

A large board absorbs stress over a large area due to temperature, underfloor heating, and movement of the substrate. A deformable adhesive of class S1 or S2 bends slightly and distributes that stress, instead of allowing it to build up in a rigid bed.

Deformability is the degree to which the cured adhesive bends without tearing, and that is exactly what a large sheet requires. The reason lies in the surface. Every tile expands slightly and contracts again with temperature changes, and that movement is greater over a 120 cm sheet than over a 10 cm tile. If a rigid adhesive is used underneath, the stress builds up into the bond. A deformable adhesive absorbs that movement.

The standard makes deformability measurable. In NEN-EN 12002 A cured test specimen of the adhesive is loaded in a three-point bending test until it breaks. The deflection in the center determines the class. An S1 adhesive deflects between 2,5 and 5 mm before breaking, an S2 adhesive more than 5 mm. The lower the modulus of elasticity of the adhesive, the more it deflects and the higher the S class.

The project context determines which S-class is appropriate. On a floor with underfloor heating, the heat penetrates the entire slab and the entire system moves cyclically, so at least S1 is advisable there, and often S2 for slabs. Outdoors, frost and direct sunlight add to the mix, increasing the movement. Technique

How does double bonding work with large panels?

With double bonding, you apply adhesive to both the substrate and the back of the tile. You comb the adhesive onto the substrate and apply a thin layer to the tile. When pressed down, both layers fuse together to form a closed bed without air pockets.

Double bonding, also known as buttering-floating, is the standard technique for large format tiles, not the exception. The name describes the two actions. Floating involves combing the adhesive onto the substrate with a notched trowel. Buttering involves applying a thin layer to the back of the tile using the flat side of the trowel. Together, both layers completely fill the space when the tile is pressed down.

The order and direction matter. You comb the substrate in strips and apply a thin layer to the tile, and when combing on both surfaces, you align the ridges perpendicular to each other. This way, air escapes to the edge when pressing down, instead of remaining trapped as a cavity. The German laying guideline DIN 18157 describes this method for ceramic cladding using the thin-bed method, where the adhesive layer remains thin after pressing down.

Glue consumption

Which glue comb and how much glue correspond to which size?

The notched trowel follows the size: 6 to 8 mm for small tiles, 10 mm from 60×60 cm, and 12 to 15 mm for slabs. For double bonding, calculate roughly 4 to 6 kg of adhesive per square meter, depending on the size and flatness of the substrate.

The notches of the adhesive trowel determine how much adhesive gets under the tile. The installer lays a small wall tile using a trowel of 6 to 8 mm. For sizes starting at 60 by 60 cm, the trowel is reduced to 10 mm, and for slabs of approximately 75 cm or more, 12 to 15 mm is used. The ridges are not an end in themselves: when pressed down, they flatten into a continuous bed. Notches that are too small under a large slab leave voids, which you will later hear as a hollow sound.

More comb means more consumption, and that counts on a project budget. With double bonding, consumption is higher than with single-sided bonding because you also coat the back. For large formats, in practice, you calculate with roughly 4 to 6 kg of powder adhesive per square meter after mixing, and for slabs with a thick comb, this approaches the upper limit. The flatness of the substrate shifts that number up: the more uneven it is, the more adhesive disappears into the valleys.

What contact surface and substrate does large format require?

An interior wall requires a minimum of 80 percent adhesive contact, while floors and exterior surfaces require 95 to 100 percent. This is achieved with double bonding on a flat, dry, and dust-free surface. A primer seals an absorbent or smooth surface before gluing.

The contact surface is the part of the tile back that is actually attached to the adhesive. The higher that percentage, the better the panel is anchored and the fewer voids there are underneath. Industry guidelines for ceramic tiling stipulate a minimum of 80 percent for an indoor wall. On a floor and for all outdoor applications, that requirement rises to 95 to 100 percent, because load, water, and frost are added to the mix.

The substrate determines whether you achieve that contact surface. Large format requires a flat surface, because a large sheet cannot bridge a bump or hollow and will then lie concave. In addition, the substrate must be dry, load-bearing, and dust-free. A primer is a pre-treatment that seals an absorbent surface or makes a smooth surface adhesive, so that the adhesive retains its open time and does not lose water too quickly.
