Material
What makes authentic terracotta tiles so recognizable?
Terracotta literally means baked earth. The material is one of the oldest types of tile and has been formed from local clay for centuries. The unglazed surface reveals the natural color of the clay, without a transparent or colored glaze layer over it. As a result, every tile looks slightly different.
Porosity is the key property. Water absorption is the percentage of water absorbed by the shard relative to its dry weight, measured according to ISO 10545-3 under vacuum conditions. For authentic terracotta, this value is around 5 to 8 percent, placing the tile in the higher absorption groups of EN 14411. Extruded clay tiles belong to product group A. This value explains why the tile attracts moisture and why a protective layer is necessary.
For the architect, that character counts as a design argument. A porous, breathable tile provides a matte, soft appearance that a glazed surface cannot match. Baking process
How are the color and character of terracotta created?
The color is a chemical result of the firing process. The clay contains iron compounds that oxidize into red iron oxides during firing in an oxygen-rich kiln. The more iron in the clay and the higher the oxidation, the deeper the red tint. Lighter sand tones and grayer tones result from a different clay composition or a different kiln atmosphere.
The firing temperature controls the density. At 950 to 1.100 degrees Celsius, the minerals in the clay fuse only partially, leaving many pores open. Porcelain stoneware fires at 1.250 to 1.300 degrees, at which point the body vitrifies almost completely. That temperature difference explains the large difference in water absorption and strength between the two materials.
Variation per batch is actually desirable for some projects. A terracotta floor with natural color distribution reads like a handcrafted surface rather than an industrial, uniform one. Impregnation is the standard for this material, not an option. A porous body absorbs moisture, grease, and spilled liquids, which can leave stains without protection. An impregnating agent penetrates the top layer and seals the pores from within, so that the tile retains its matte appearance but becomes less sensitive. This is a significant difference compared to a glaze layer, which actually covers the surface.
The order of the work requires careful attention. The floor must be fully cured and dry, with a residual moisture content of around 2 to 4 percent, before the impregnating agent is applied. An overly damp surface traps moisture under the protective layer. After impregnation, acid-free cleaning works best: aggressive or acidic agents damage the protective layer and the clay.
Maintenance is therefore a recurring regime rather than a one-off action. The protective layer wears down over the years and is updated periodically, depending on the intensity of foot traffic. For an indoor residential floor, this is straightforward; for a busy public space, it requires more attention. Take into account in the project planning that the first impregnation takes time after installation, before the space is put into use.
